Here's a mash-up of the Cool Kids vs. Hey Champ, a band that toured with Lupe Fiasco a while back-- they're a rock/pop band but with an electronic-heavy sound. The remix has a really cool vibe, definitely worth the listen if you like the Cool Kids, or more specifically their most recent mixtape, Gone Fishing. The chorus gets on my nerves, I wish they didn't mix the two choruses together, but whatever. Still a hot track.

I deserve some serious punishment for not posting this earlier. This mixtape is simply monster. With Don Cannon on production, those minimal beats we thought were trademark Cool Kids have been put on hold (until When Fish Ride Bicycles maybe..), giving way to a richer, more complete sound. And lyrically it simply soars. I couldn't speak more highly of this album -- it's their best to date and warrants infinity listens. Oh and guess what?

The Cool Kids' follow-up to the underground success The Bake Sale is called When Fish Ride Bicycles, a name whose coolness we probably won't understand till we hear it. "Pennies" may or may not be part of it (they said they're not on a tight schedule by any means, they're just releasing songs when they please), but it's good stuff either way. Their metaphors and wordplay are ultra lighthearted but have as much or more legitimacy than 95% of the rappers out there.

A different version of "Pennies" appeared on the video game NBA 2K9, and speaking of NBA 2K, the duo is scheduled to headline the NBA 2K Bounce Tour with classy ex-Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip. And if you haven't already, check that stellar performance Q did on Conan a few nights ago, performing the groovy "We Fight / Love" off his recent Renaissance.

The Black Cab Sessions eclipsed the 50 chapter mark with The Cool Kids, hip-hop duo from Chicago that popped up in 2007 with their Totally Flossed Out EP, then the critically acclaimed Bake Sale earlier this year. They've been making their rounds, performing at the Pitchfork Music Festival, and in general just gaining mad popularity.

The session is a three parter: an untitled song from Antoine Reed (aka Mikey Rocks), an untitled song from Evan Ingersoll (aka Chuck Inglish), then a freestyle from Mikey Rocks.

And in Cool Kids style, there are no artificial beats. It's all hand made, although Mikey's beatwork could take a lesson from Chuck's.

UPDATE (11:37 pm): Chuck Inglish raps about fish riding bicycles in the cab, which is actually the name of the duo's first full-length disc: When Fish Ride Bicycles. Mikey and Chuck have been a bit stingy playing new material, so hopefully that will reflect positively toward the new album.

Inglish said to RubyHornet.com: “We’re about to embark on a whole new section of our lives here. We’re about to throw out this album, and this is our first album so it means a lot to us. We worked really hard on it and we’re ready to start unveiling the joints to everybody. We’re really hyped about getting on the road and performing the new joints and seeing what everybody thinks.”

"We’re taking everything we did and just doing it 30 million times better. We’re still ourselves, I ain’t switching the game up for nobody. We’re still ourselves and we’re just going to do the stuff that we do and just continue to get way better at it. The beats, way better. The raps, way better. We’re pretty simple dudes, if you can stick to basics and fine tune what you’re doing, you’ll be straight."

Another legit performance by Chicago's Cool Kids, live at the 2007 Pitchfork Music Festival.

Over the past few months, The Cool Kids have been given a huge amount of hype in the alternative hip-hop blogosphere, which is really not that surprising. Their old-to-new-school beats fit seamlessly with their light-hearted self-praising lyrics to produce an extraordinarily unique sound.

Their music truly is a breath of fresh air, not because it's revolutionary, but because it is so on-point to what they were trying to achieve. The Cool Kids' view of hip-hop is fundamentally different than any other emcees, because most of the time, they are just bragging and joking about how fresh they are.

"Thennn, we can kick it like kickstandsss and,
You know I peddle to the chainslip
So fly propellers propel us to the angels"

Though hip-hop is not the festival's strong point, the slick duo prove themselves an act viable for any festival.

The group just recently released their Bake Sale EP.
