Japanese Cartoon is a band on Lupe's label that we posted on a while back, back when rumors were flying that Lupe was the lead singer of the band. They collaborate on this pretty hot track; I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again.

Lupe's record label has been shutting down all links to the leaked version of the song "Shining Down". It is pretty difficult to find an unbroken link for the download and some people report that it isn't even the final mix. So, we will not post a link, because we know that it will either get deleted immediately or we will get in some legal trouble. However, there are youtube videos of Lupe performing the song live.

"Shining Down" is supposed to be the first single off Lupe's third album, Lasers, which is slated to be released in the fourth quarter of 2009. The song features a collaboration with Matthew Santos, who is the dude responsible for the incessant "If you are what you say you are, a superstar..." crooning during Lupe's most popular single, "Superstar". As evidenced in both collaborations, these two have voices that play really well off of each other. The song also features Lupe getting his shot at the infamous auto-tuner. This song should be a big hit, make sure you find a clean recording and pick up the album when it comes out.

Rumors were flying around the internet saying Lupe Fiasco was taking on a new persona (with a British accent!) in the UK indie rock outfit Japanese Cartoon, but it is confirmed that he is not the lead singer - and thank god. He is the producer though, which is still surprising. But the music ain't great, which isn't surprising considering Fiasco has never worked with a band in his life.

As previously reported, Lupe is planning a triple disc for 2009 entitled LupE.N.D.- and if he keeps his promise, it will be his last solo effort.

And if the rumors are true, over 50 tracks exist between the three.

Below is a video of his concert Halloween night at the Congress Theater in Chicago. After his dragged-out LupE.N.D. announcement is an acoustic version of "Superstar".

If you're not caught up with Lupe's plans for retirement, he gave the low-down to Pitchfork regarding his retirement late last year: "I'm at a creative end," he explained. "I really don't think I have that much to say. And I don't want to get to the point where I'm putting out music just to put out music. Especially recording music. I'll still perform as long as a venue will have me and a promoter will have me. Always. Until I'm 100 years old." But actual recorded music is another thing in itself. The interview process, the radio process, the video process, the budget process-- that shit wears at you, tears at you. And I've been doing the music business for like eight years. And prior to that, on the underground level trying to get to a professional level, about 10-15 years. It's a heavy process and you just get to the point where you're just like, 'I don't know.' It's just like three is enough."

Does he have any music plans besides performing? "I'm going to step back and run my label [1st & 15th]. I've got Matthew Santos, who's my artist. Gemini, Sarah Green, Soundtrakk, just on a more production side. So I've got a full-fledged credible label with credible musicians on it. So I'll sit back and do that. And then I'll talk to different people and get inspired."
