The band will release their sixth album entitled Diamond Eyes on May 18th of this year. Note that this is NOT Eros, the album they were working on at the time of Chi's car accident. Chino said Eros will be released eventually, hopefully once Chi is back on his feet. Diamond Eyes is a brand new album that they have made since Chi fell into the coma, and they said it is more optimistic than Eros, which was an experimentally dark album. Sergio Vega fills in on bass for the new one.

The first single, "Rocket Skates", will be available tomorrow for download.

For being one of my favorite bands, I really don't post deftones stuff that much. Part of the reason is that they don't release new material that often, and the other part sadly is that bassist Chi Cheng has been in a coma for about a year now after being in a bad car accident. Apparently he is out of serious condition though and has been able to walk around, but that is not confirmed.

After releasing several amazing nu-metal albums in the '90s and 2000's (and facing a near break-up in 2005), the deftones veered towards a more electronic, carefully produced sound with their 2006 album Saturday Night Wrist. And after touring in support of it, they went back into the studio to record Eros, an album which was scheduled for an October 2009 release. Chino described it as "weird", sounding most like their platinum 2000 album White Pony, but then Chi got in the crash and since then the band has announced that they're working on a new album.

Eros is still awaiting a release date (the band claims it is not because of Chi's condition), but it should be out eventually.

Here's a track that they've played a few times live that everyone supposes will be on Eros. It's called "Rocket Skates" and like all Deftones songs, make sure you're on edge of your seat.

A charity auction is being held online for Chi featuring some brilliant portraits, so head over to CharityBuzz.com/BenefitforChi to check everything out. Another batch of items will be posted on Tuesday.

Stay up to date at the deftones' website.

Doctors report that Chi is in stable condition and responding well to treatment. "Chi was able to hear and respond to his father's request to move his lower lip. His father also administered a tendon reflex test, of which both legs responded with movement."

The bassist's mother and family would like to "thank you for all your love and support" through these tough times.

Should Chi recover swiftly, the Deftones next album Eros will be slamming our eardrums this winter. And from what we've heard, it has potential to be one of the best Deftones records yet. "Melanie" has the old-school Deftones aggression, but don't expect the whole thing to sound like Adrenaline. Saturday Night Wrist deviated heavily from that sound, and that was only two years ago. Expect Eros to be a hybrid of those two very different styles.

Deftones' bassist Chi Cheng was involved in an automobile accident late Monday night in Santa Clara, and is currently in a "serious but stable condition" in a San Jose hospital according to singer Chino Moreno via the band's blog.

"...I am on my way up North right now to be by his side along with the rest of our band mates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this. Please say a prayer for him as well."

Fans flooded Chino's post with heartwarming comments for the 38 year-old Buddhist, who considers himself to be a better poet than musician [link to the interview]. Cheng's most notable poetry release is "The Bamboo Parachute", a spoken word album released in 2000.

The Sacramento rock band was recording their sixth studio album Eros that is currently planned for an early 2009 release. Chi says it's "heavy as fuck with a shitload of groove. ... I always say this shit, but I truly believe this album to be well worth the wait and [I] appreciate all your support and kind loyalty." A YouTube video shows a live performance of a new track called "Melanie". Looks like some Adrenaline is back!

We'll be sure to keep you updated on Chi's condition.

Looks like the Deftones upcoming Eros is shaping up to be a quality release, if we take drummer Abe Cunningham's word for it.

Cunningham said in the band's blog that the band has finished the initial stage of recording, and are set to add finishing touches and begin mixing in the beginning of September, which should put the album release sometime in the first quarter of 2009.

We still have yet to hear much about the album besides the fact that the band is working very well together this time around, although apparently it couldn't have been much worse with Saturday Night Wrist. In our last Deftones update, Chi talked about a song tentatively titled "Trempest." saying it's "heavy as fuck with a shitload of groove". Take what you can from that (Chi always makes things interesting..), and we'll be sure to keep you updated anything and everything Eros.

Also, Deftones will be headlining KUPD’s End of Summer Scorcher September 20th in Peoria, Arizona with Alice In Chains. Tickets go on sale this Monday, August 4th via Tickets.com. Check it out the lineup at KUPD.com.

Following their 2006 LP Saturday Night Wrist, Chino and the gang ready Eros, an album with a completely different birth than previous records.

The decision to record the album came a month after their 246 concert tour for Saturday Night Wrist, an album produced with tension within the band. Chino: "Making that last record was seriously [an] unhealthy experience. It just dragged on without much direction. Even the idea of the record was just to make something vague, and that's pretty much what we did".

"That's changed now that we've shifted our approach". Things seem to be going smoother than ever, as the band plans to release Eros quicker than any of their other records, due sometime later this year.

They said in May that they were finally able to do something for this record they have wanted to do for a long time, which is to make a record "at our place, on our time, on our dime", said Chino.

Bassist Chi Cheng says Eros is their "most unorthodox piece of work, not only sound-wise but the way a lot of the songs have come about. There is also some of that good old 'fuck you, i hope you die!' aggression I know a lot of you love and miss from us".

Talking about a song tentatively titled "Trempest.", Chi says it's "heavy as fuck with a shitload of groove". A nice to-the-point comment.

Keep checking back, as the release date for the album should be juuuusst about here.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Eros is the Greek god of love.
