This band laid the foundation for Broken Social Scene, as it's core members were Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin, and a bunch of other people contributed on their second album (they only had two). If you're a fan of BSS you will love this, although its different--- mostly instrumental, but it keeps the same summery rock feel. Oh, warm weather.

Hear some songs at their unofficial MySpace, or read about them at their wiki page.

Langerado regulars are going to have some initial backlash with the news of this year's festival: it has been cut back down to three days and worst of all camping has been eliminated from the equation! Also the location has changed from the Big Cypress Indian Reservation to Bicentennial Park in Miami. But don't get too down: the initial lineup looks spectacular. Girl Talk, Slightly Stoopid, and Umphrey's make returns, plus tons of newcomers. I expected bigger headliners than Death Cab and Snoop Dogg, but this is quite pleasing for the first announcement.

Tickets go on sale December 12 at noon ET at Langerado.com.

Even though this is only Broken Social Scene's current touring configuration of people, there were still some twelve-odd people on stage during the performance. Brock's vocals are classy and poignant, but seem to drown out the band's performance until the end of the song. "The World at Large" fits in perfectly with the typical instrumentation of a Broken Social Scene show and the crowd appears to receive the collaboration quite well. The video quality is pretty good:

Broken Social Scene's current tour has had other interesting surprises. Lizzie Powell, lead singer from Land of Talk, has been taking over Feist's vocals from such signatures as "7/4 Shoreline", as reported here. Charles Spearin, from Do Make Say Think and Kevin Drew's side project KC Accidental, has also been touring with BSS, switching between guitar, bass, and trumpet. At the BSS tour stop in Atlanta, Georgia, Spearin introduced the crowd to an experiment he had been working on involving recognizing rhythm in normal speech. He played a clip of his neighbor, an elderly Jamaican woman, speaking to him in an interview and then showed how a saxophone could be played along with the correct pitch of the woman's voice in order to create a sweet melody. Very interesting stuff.

If you saw her interview with Pitchfork back in May, you might have gotten that feeling.

Speaking to the Canadian Press, she said: "[My career] has become kind of large and it really began for me very, very small, like me alone in my bedroom with my four-track and a pair of headphones. I just need to go back there for a while to get my bearings again and then know what to do next."

Luckily this break doesn't seem permanent, but she has also announced that she has no further plans to collaborate with her Canadian up-start band, Broken Social Scene. "It's not really as interesting for me as it once was," she said. "[It] would be like a reunion to be able to hang out with everyone -- but I can do that around a kitchen table."

And despite the minor mic issues, she does a really impressive job. Of course it's no competition for Feist's job on the original recording, but that's kind of implied.

As saddeningly usual, the band was not in full force. Only 11 members this time.

For once.

The Broken Social Scene frontman delivers "Summer Time Dues", which interestingly starts out with Drew --- coughing. Cue classic Kevin Drew style acoustic guitar and melodic vocals, and you have yourself there a quality intro. Sounding almost exactly like... well... uh... Coldplay during the chorus, the song builds on itself quite nicely moving toward the ending. Trombone and trumpet propel the latter half of the piece in a mellow but bright way, giving it a unique feel from Drew's Spirit If... which had a more progressive feel throughout.
