[New] Beach House – “The Arrangement”

B-more dream poppers are set to release a new EP on Record Store Day, April 14th. Their latest album Teen Dream just came out last month, and it was an interesting shift-- the songs being more crisply than their past two albums. It seems to have worked for them because the album gained much more attention than it's predecessors. Here's a cut off the EP, "The Arrangement".

10 Must-hear Albums from 2009

So finally, here is my list of "must-hear" albums from this year. I'm a little late to the scene but hopefully you guys aren't exhausted of these yet. I'll keep it easy on the reading part.

I wasn't sure what to call this list, but I think that "best of" and "favorite" are overused since any one person can only listen to a tiny portion of all the albums that came out this year, and one person's favorites won't exactly match another's. So I tried to pick some of my favorite albums that are a bit obscure but also that I think a large number of people can appreciate. My hope is that you'll stick to some of these albums, because I think they all have great replay value too.

Beach House – “Norway” + album leaks

"Norway" is the second song released from the band's upcoming album, following the "Used To Be" 7" which came out back in October.

Teen Dream (artwork above) is out Jan. 26 although it leaked online a couple weeks ago (I normally don't announce leaks but Teen Dream sounds like a must-have for winter break). However if you do decide to buy it, you'll get a DVD with a music video for each song. I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but from what I have heard it's fabulous. Their dreamy sound resonates so nicely, especially with this new single. Beach House ftw.

Beach House – ‘Teen Dream’ Album Details

Slow jams don't get much slower than Beach House. The Baltimore pop duo have their third album coming out on Sub Pop this January after their 2006 and 2008 albums on Carpark. The writing and recording took place "in a secluded practice space and...a converted church in upstate New York with producer Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio)".

Synthesizer Shaikh: A one-man band that sounds kinda like Yeasayer on "The Rise". He tags it "some mix between electronic, psychedelic, and post-rock." He started making music in college on his computer with Ableton Live, and spent two years making/mastering his first full-length album, SamIAm. And he's not charging a penny for it. Get it here.

"Colbert" I watch the Report a decent bit, but must have missed the episode where he announced a remix contest. This one is on the album as well.

Passion Pit - "The Reeling" (mp3)

Michael Angelakos released the buzzed-about electro-pop Chunk of Change EP by himself under the Passion Pit moniker last September. For the band's first LP Manners (out in May)he assembled a full band, and on this song you can definitely tell: it's got more going on than any of the songs on Chunk.

Cymbals Eat Guitars: Their debut album earned Best New Music from Pitchfork and although I've only heard the songs on their MySpace, but I trust the rest is good.

Grizzly Bear play "Two Weeks", one of the best tracks off their amazing leaked album Veckatimest, for the first time in a live setting. Victoria Legrand of Beach House contributes to the chorus on the record, and guess what, she was right there with them at SXSW:

Grizzly Bear and Department Of Eagles have band member overlap, and if you like one, you're sure to like the other. Here is the Dept.'s new video for "No One Does It Like You" (mp3) off their recent album In Ear Park:

English alt-rock band Doves have a new album coming out entitled Kingdom Of Rust. Here are a few tracks from it:

Peter, Bjorn, and John's new album Living Thing doesn't come out till 3/31, but you can stream it now at their MySpace page. You probably know them from their hit singles "Young Folks" and "Amsterdam".

Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2008

None of these picks are mind-blowing if you've been keeping up with their record reviews over the past year, so as far as consistency goes, and as a whole, they do a decent job. But a handful of picks seem kinda crazy to me: New Age at #3 (it's good but not that good), Cut Copy at #4 (same deal), and most obviously Kanye at #21 (completely undeserved... it's his worst record to date and even the explanation is weak).

Fleet Foxes didn't surprise me at #1 but I don't think you can say they made the best record of year; rather, they came from the middle of nowhere, delivered a collection of excellent songs, and had the best year out of any bands on this list.

Video: Beach House at the beach – “Used To Be”

We've shown you quite a few Beach House clips including a Black Cab session, but I think this one suits the band a bit better.

Accompanied by Celebration's Dave Bergander on tambourine, Alex and Victoria play the newly familiar "Used To Be" at Sydney's "Glamourama Beach".

The Used To Be 7" single is out now on Carpark records, with a 4-track demo of Apple Orchard (off the 2006 self-titled record) as the B-side.

Don't miss the best part! Victoria and Alex play TLC's "Waterfalls" at the end.

More uptempo than their entire Devotion LP, "Used To Be" undoubtedly still retains Beach House's mellow lo-fi sound. Not like we expected too much of a change; the formula has worked fine on their last two albums.

The 7" inch is out October 21, and features "Used To Be" on the A-side, and a four track demo of "Apple Orchard" from their 2006 self-titled debut on the B-side.

Accompanying the track is, you guessed it, another interview. This time the band talks about their day jobs, something that is obviously quite odd for a band with such popularity.
