The Do-Over is a summertime party in L.A. founded by Aloe Blacc, Stones Throw behind-the-scenes architect Jamie Strong & Chris Haycock featuring a who’s who of mystery guests. The renown party now comes to life in the form of a Limited 10-inch record series featuring exclusive tracks from guests of the party. Each volume is [...]

Mad Decent’s FREE GUCCI Mixtape

by Mark Jackson on January 12th, 2010 No Comments

Presented by Diplo’s Mad Decent label, Free Gucci is a 15-track remix CD of the recently re-jailed Gucci Mane. It features Flying Lotus, Memory Tapes, SALEM, and Brodinski among others, remixing tracks from Gucci’s “Cold War” mixtape series. As can be expected with any mixtape, there are some disappointments (in the Flying Lotus track especially), but as a whole it’s a must-have if you like any of the above musicians.

PNAU – Baby (Breakbot Remix)

by Mark Jackson on January 9th, 2010 No Comments

I don’t know anything about either of these bands, but that doesn’t matter. What does is that if you want some Justice D.A.N.C.E.-like electro-pop to fuel you, listen to this. For the record, I don’t even really like Justice, I just like that song. Pnau – Baby (Breakbot Remix) [via et musique pour tous]

The Hype Machine’s Top 50 Most Blogged-About Artists/Albums/Songs

by Mark Jackson on January 8th, 2010 2 Comments

The list itself is pretty uninteresting if you’ve been keeping up at all with popular blogs, but there are two things that make it something worth checking out: First, the artwork for each artist is simply awesome. Some very intricate stuff (from various artists), and 90% of the time it represents the musician very well [...]

RJD2 – “December 4th (Cannibal OX – F Work Mix)”

by Mark Jackson on January 7th, 2010 No Comments

I’m going to see him next Saturday, and while I was searching the hype machine I found this sick remix to Jay-Z’s “December 4th”. I don’t know the Cannibal OX song but regardless this is one of the best remixes I’ve heard in a while. RJD2 coming through as usual. By the way if you [...]

Maxwell ft. Nas – “Help Somebody” remix

by Mark Jackson on January 4th, 2010 No Comments

I don’t know much about Maxwell but this track is pretty freakin good. The original appeared on Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night, but this is a new one done for the RED initiative. It’s the same for the most part except with Nas coming in with a verse near the end.

mp3: ‘A Decade Of Flying Lotus’ Mixed by The Gaslamp Killer

by Mark Jackson on January 2nd, 2010 No Comments

As with most abstract music, it takes a certain kind of mindset and environment for it to be enjoyed to the fullest… relaxed, forward-thinking, meditative, open-minded. If you’re stressed or mad, it goes to waste because you’re taking something that can be interpreted many ways and shining it in negative light. In those cases it’s [...]

Lupe Fiasco – “Kick Push (Killer Tomato Remix)”

by Mark Jackson on December 31st, 2009 2 Comments

Just found this newly uploaded remix over at DJ Killer Tomato’s MySpace. He does mostly (if not only) remixes and mash-ups and this is one of my favorites from him. I’m not sure what the instrumental is, but it fits really well.

New Old Black Moth Super Rainbow Album – The Autumn Kaleidoscope Got Changed

by Mark Jackson on December 30th, 2009 No Comments

This album was just released despite being the predecessor to the band’s 2003 album Falling Through A Field. Some songs overlap, but most are new. [...]

The Cool Kids & Don Cannon – Merry Christmas Mixtape

by Mark Jackson on December 27th, 2009 1 Comments

Gone Fishing was soooo close to making my must-hear albums of 2009 list, and it looks like this end-of-year surprise from the makers of it is a sign that it should have. These 4 tracks are titled a “Merry Christmas Mixtape”, but it’s not a very good description. They don’t have anything Christmas-y, but they’re [...]
