Junk Culture – West Coast EP
| by Mark Jackson on November 6th, 2009 |
A 19-minute EP made entirely of samples, West Coast is a tropical-sounding record that takes on a life of it's own.
The hip-hop beat that kicks off the album opener "West Coast" sets an optimistic tone, and despite how much the sound might veer from that (not too often), the feeling that track brings permeates throughout the record.
As you'd expect from a samples-only album, it's jumpy. He sometimes throws in unexpected breaks that seem like they are there just to mess with you. But even despite these moments and the album's quick pace, it flows in a curious way. You might not think so just after one listen but this album begs to be replayed. After two or three listens I'm sure you'll agree with me.
The EP is available at Illegal Art in a pay-what-you-want format.
