Animal Collective: New Song, “My Girls” Video, Free Concert Download, My Thoughts on Merriweather

by Mark Jackson on January 27th, 2009

I'm liking Merriweather Post Pavilion the more I listen to it, but its both a natural and unnatural progression for the band. I think its good they are mixing it up, creating new sounds, but I don't think its their best stuff. Yeah, there are some fabulous songs, but people are saying it's AC's best album and I think that's far from the truth. Yeah, it's all pretty subjective, but to pick one record I'd choose the raw meanderings of Feels any day over Merriweather because it suits them better. I don't think of AC as this great electronic band, and that won't change, at least until their next album. After only a few listens, it does sound like they forced the whole electronic thing a little much. Lyrically, "Daily Routine" and "My Girls" seem like they'd fit better on any album but Merriweather. But to give credit where it's due, they made it work, and I can't blame them for experimenting and opening themselves up. I just think there are lots of people who are Merriweather obsessed because of it's accessibility that haven't bathed in the more organic AC. Anyway, sorry to run on with my opinion.

Onto the new content.

"My Girls" music video:

AC's performance at the Bowery Ballroom last week is a free download, so hop on it! They whipped out a new song called "Blue Sky" which you can also download here if you want two versions of it. It's a slower one, and it's also very, very good.
