Video: Final Fantasy: “Blue Imelda”

by Mark Jackson on November 23rd, 2008

This video was my first listen to Final Fantasy, the solo project of Polaris Prize winner Owen Pallett, and wow, what a unique sound. "Blue Imelda" begins with birds chirping and an adventurous buildup leads to a very Animal Collective-esque percussion rhythm that anchors the track. The brass orchestra chimes in later and adds confidence and even more personality to the song along with a beachy instrument I can't put my finger on - I know I heard it somewhere in Peter Bjorn & John's Seaside Rock. As far as Pallett's vocals go, it took a few listens for them to satisfy me as they're way short on personality; I'd say try not to judge them too harshly the first few listens through and instead just feel out the lyrics.

The video is much more mysterious but again seeps in after a few viewings. I'm still unsure as to what the comets are supposed to symbolize (use our comments box!!), but other than that you should be able to get your head around it (that's assuming you listen to the lyrics of course).
