when the kings released thier first e.p., molly's chambers, they were known in thier local area as the southern strokes but not because people compared them to the strokes. in fact, i don't think that they had a following at all at that point. caleb and nathan were told by rca that they wanted to put a band together FOR them so they scrambled to grab thier other brother and a cousin that they kidnapped from mississippi and locked themselves in the basement for a month w/ songwriter angelo patraglia. thier bass player had never played his instrument just a month earlier. the name kings of leon is tribute to thier father and grandfather also named leon. incidentally, soft is not on because of the times. that song is on aha shake heartbreak and it is a sad sad tale about whiskey- d**k.

Wow, you took what I've been thinking for some time now and organized it and explained it beautifully in your article. Great Job!

Saw them at the MTV "movie awards" recently and was just thinking the same thing, the argument that you elucidated beautifully. I've got nothing against the KOL, but I don't trust them like I trust the Strokes. I know the fourth album will be great. They won't make a conscious decision to change their minds midstream like the KOL obviously did. Nice article.
