Wilco Talk New Album, Due Spring ’09

by Mark Jackson on August 23rd, 2008

Cohesive, moving, and many times epic, the progressing sound of Wilco has a lot to live up to after last year’s fantastic Sky Blue Sky. And it’s follow up will be released sooner than expected: as early as Spring ’09.

Some lucky festival-goers have caught a glimpse of what the six-piece has in store for us next. The songs “One Wing (Live at Lollapalooza 2008)” and “Sunny Feeling (Live in Indianapolis 8/4/08” are ready for download and should give a small look into Wilco’s next full-length.

Tweedy is excited about the new project which should "allow [Wilco] a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument. Last time around, it was more of a document."

Tweedy told Albany N.Y. radio station WAMC regarding the band’s six previous albums: "None of them are a statement that I would be comfortable making right now at this point in my life. They all served their purpose, and in that respect I'm proud of all of them.

"But as something that feels artistically in keeping with who I am today, I think that they are inevitably going to fall short of that as time goes on. I mean, they just don't continue to mean the same things to me, and a new record is kind of where it's at."

Sky Blue Sky was a refreshing release for Tweedy, his first since getting over his painkillers addiction. Bassist John Stirratt said that Tweedy’s overcoming “significantly improved the focus of the band”, so in a way it’s expected that Tweedy and friends have another album in the works.
